Men's Volleyball Sweeps East Stroudsburg En Route to Seventh Straight Home Win

The New York University men's volleyball team out-killed East Stroudsburg University 51-33 and hit .374 in a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday night, March 26, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (18-6), currently ranked #2 in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, set the tone early in the match, running out to an 11-3 lead in game one on their way to a 30-20 win.

Game two proved to be more of the same, this time with NYU taking an 18-7 lead, eventually winning the game 30-23.

The Warriors (2-13) put up a fight in game three however, taking their largest leads at 22-18 and 25-23. But the Violets went on a 10-2 run to close the match, winning the final game 30-26 and the match 3-0.

"This was another strong win for us," commented assistant coach Chris Pinto after the match. "We are really starting to come together and play as a team, and we are ready for what's coming the rest of the season"

Leading the way on offense once again for NYU was senior tri-captain Jonathan Wintermeyer, who put down a game-high 16 kills while hitting .652 with five blocks.

Also in double-digits for the Violets was freshman Francis Hodgson. He put down 10 kills while hitting .643 and adding four blocks.

Junior Ilan Goldstein and sophomore Braden Fujikawa shared the setting duties for the Violets. Goldstein put up 29 assists in the first two games along with four digs and two kills, while Fujikawa added 16 assists in the final game.

Along the back line, senior tri-captain David Tener recorded 12 digs for his ninth double-digit digs match of the season and his third in a row.

For the Warriors, sophomore Chris Holden led the way on offense, putting down a team-high 12 kills while adding three service aces, two digs, and two blocks.

Senior John Post and freshman Josh Hobson shared the setting for East Stroudsburg, with Post putting up 16 assists and Hobson adding 13.

On defense, junior R.J. Roth led the way with eight digs.

The Violets return to action this Saturday, March 29, when they host EIVA Hay rival and Division I opponent Harvard University. The Violets narrowly beat the Crimson in a five-game thriller in their first match-up of the season on February 22, in Cambridge, MA. First serve is set for 2:00 pm.
