ROMEU (or Romeo, or Romero). Do these three surnames belong to a same
lineage? That is the deduction of some illustrious chroniclers, genealogists
and historians of the antiquity, since in those three forms they named, in
theirs works, to the progenitors and more famous personages of this family. The
lineage is very ancient. In the same past times appears in Galicia and Aragon
with the modalities of Romeu and Romero indistinctively, to be extended then by
Valencia, Catalonia, Andalusia, both Castilles and Canaries. These continuers
of the main branch of the trunk line and the members belonging to the various
houses derived from the main one, are named in the most authorized informative
sources (manuscripts and books) with any of the three mentioned variants
without explanation about the motives that originated them. There are some
contradictions relating to the real origin of the lineage and to the ancestral
houses and the others three variants. So, it's logical that the doubt, in some
phases of the development of this family, contradicts the categorical
affirmation of the fact that Romeu, Romeo or Romero constitute a same surname,
though without destroying the justified possibility of the fact that they would
be. ( A.and A.García Carraffa).

THE LINEAGE ROMEU ![]()
(Upper
bourgeoisie of Barcelona in the Middle Ages)
Exist multiple historical
references to the lineage or family Romeu between the centuries XIII and XVII
in Barcelona as integrating of the oligarchy of the city, together with other
illustrious families as the Dufort, Fivaller, Llull, Gualbes...The Romeu belong
to the class of honourables citizens very bound to the city of Barcelona and
"d'antiga nissaga" (ancient dynasty) according to Duran i
Sanpere. This high status of the Romeu has been produced assuredly thanks to
the trade (probably foreing and maritime); that's why, they are considered
enormously rich merchants with a "modus vivendi", some of they,
similar to that of the urban aristocracy type family Montcada in the century
XV. Garssias Romei appear in a text of the era of Pere el Catòlic
(King Peter the Catholic); if we consider that Romei it is the Latin form of
Romeu, then this Garssias would be the Romeu most ancient found until the
moment and would be also a personage of great importance as he is one of the
witnesses of a real document together with members of the highest catalan
aristocracy. The rest of found Romeus are to appear after Jaume I (King
James I). In the evolution of this oligarchical family throughout, minimally, 5
centuries, we find Consellers (Councillors), Consellers en Cap
(First Councillors) of Barcelona, Cònsols del mar (Consuls of the sea),
members of the Consell de Cent (Council of Hundred), Veguers
(Magistrates), Knights, etc. of those which emphasizes Guillem Romeu (son), with
an impressive political career and with constant references in the texts of the
era; very known and influential, it was Conseller en Cap in 1460 as
member of the "Busca" where many died submitted to torment by
the "Biga". (Guillem Romeu -L. in History by the UB-) /
